No AI – real sauna project: We were allowed to plan and build this wonderful sauna for the chalet of a builder in Switzerland.

From the custom-made sauna, you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Swiss mountains while taking a sauna. For this purpose, the external window on site was integrated into the sauna. The exterior old wood shutters also create a rustic, cosy effect.

The modernly designed sauna is built entirely in hemlock wood with a straight edge. Hemlock is an ideal sauna wood due to its very smooth…

Hemlock is an ideal sauna wood due to its very smooth surface – and it is also very popular because of its warm, honey-coloured tone. Thanks to the indirect LED lighting, which is integrated into the slightly ergonomically shaped backrests, the entire sauna shines in cosy hemlock colour.

During the planning, special emphasis was placed on symmetrical lines. To ensure that the design sauna heater does not come to the fore too much, it was suitably clad with hemlock wood. As a combination heater, it allows the sauna to be used either as a Finnish sauna or as a bio sauna (with lower temperatures and increased humidity).

Hemlock wood was also used in the bathroom design: for this purpose, we built a custom-made lounger in an identical look. The headboard can be set either flat or slanted. The second finger hole gives access to the storage space in the bench.

Sauna with an exterior window: what do you have to consider?

Plastic windows are not suitable for installation in a sauna with a window, as they can warp due to the high heat. In addition, plastic windows could release harmful fumes due to high heat and humidity.

Instead, wooden windows are used in the area of sauna construction, and aluminium windows are also suitable.

However, if there is already a plastic window on site that is not to be replaced, special solutions can be found in sauna planning: One possibility, for example, is to place a second window in front of it, which is made of wood and ESG glass.

Sauna with glass corner in rod look

Design Sauna nach Maß mit Glasecke in Thermo-Espe Stäbchenoptik mit indirekter LED Rückenlehnenbeleuchtung und Außenfenster. Biosauna. Saunabau Münster.

We were allowed to build this custom-made sauna for a family in Münster: the dark thermo aspen in a rod profile creates a very special sauna look. The sauna benches and backrests are also optically designed in a rod look, and the joints have been perfectly coordinated.

The room (actually) has a floor-to-ceiling window, the additional built-in sauna window deliberately reduces the light cut-out in favor of sauna cosiness – such a solution is also possible.

The photos were taken during the day – but you can imagine how wonderful it must be to relax in the sauna at home in the evening “above the rooftops of the city” and enjoy the view of the stars in the sky…

Through the sauna wall, which continues to the outside, the cosy, dark sauna wood has an effect on the entire room. Beautiful details are the storage area for the sauna bucket and the black fittings, which harmonize perfectly with the black sauna accessories.

The dark pendant lights above the stove pick up on the narrow lines of the rod profile and create a homely, cosy ambience. The LEDs behind the backrests also provide pleasant, indirect lighting for the entire sauna cabin.

Wellness and relaxation: that’s what the client of this sauna wished to realize in his house. Like a designer piece of furniture, it now blends into the fitness area. It was designed in thermo-aspen and fine oak real wood veneer: the dark woods and the indirect LED lighting create a cozy atmosphere. Do you use the sauna regularly?

“Yes, I’m in the whirlpool several times a week, but also in the sauna.”

What do you like most about your sauna?

“The sauna inspires me in several ways: the scent of the thermowood, which smells slightly of caramel. Through the large glass front (corner glazing) we have a beautiful view of the whirlpool and garden. And with the combi sauna heater, we can use the sauna as a bio sauna or as a Finnish sauna, depending on our mood. All this really makes the sauna a perfect haven of peace.”

Our tip for builders who are planning a tailor-made sauna for their home:

If you are planning a sauna, please contact us very early. This gives us the opportunity to provide you with the best possible advice so that the on-site requirements can already be taken into account during construction planning. If, for example, the sauna heater is to be installed free-standing in the glass corner, as in this project, this naturally looks particularly chic if the cables are laid invisibly under the tiled floor. To do this, sauna planning must be carried out at an early stage and in detail so that the cables come out of the ground at the right point.

We have individually planned and built this sauna with window to the outside as a custom-made product. In an interview, the client is very satisfied with the project realization:

What were your wishes for the project?

“Our design idea was that the sauna with a window to the outside should look spacious and open, accessible from the bathroom and look good.”

How did you come up with the sauna idea?

“We wanted a sauna to keep fit in old age and have a good time…

…to enjoy beautiful hours (especially in winter) with relaxation and good music in our own home. Especially if you’ve had a stressful day, it’s a very pleasant way to wind down and relax. And this has actually been a complete success: With the corso sauna, we have found a new haven of peace in our lives, which gives us a break for body, mind and soul.”

Were there any particular challenges, how were they solved?

“The particular challenge lay in the sloping ceiling and the low ceiling height. As a result, however, it has been possible to create an airy, spacious sauna room despite its niche character (small room with a low ceiling).”

The large passage directly to the bathroom is practical, making it easy and quick to reach the shower to cool off after the sauna.

What do you like most about the sauna?

“I particularly like the sauna bench/wall that is extended further outwards, which makes the sauna look even more spacious. The black tongues between the light profiled wood are visually very beautiful and it all looks very harmonious, as we have designed the woods of the back wall and the seat to be the same width. As a result, the entire look of the sauna looks very calm and homogeneous.”

How often do you relax in your sauna?

“We now use the sauna 1 – 2 times a week and enjoy the healthy moments of relaxation very much.”

How did you find out about corso?

“We came to corso through the company Treibholz from Bremen. Treibholz has been with us for many years as a specialist shop for ecological and sustainable furniture construction and as an interior designer.”

Sauna with window to the outside: Which windows are suitable?

Instead, wooden windows are used in sauna construction, and aluminum windows are also suitable. Design sauna on garage roof

Sauna auf Garagendach: Altholzsauna in Maßanfertigung mit

Within the house, there was no space for a private wellness area. Therefore, the idea arose to build this sauna on the garage roof. The result is a perfect retreat with a fantastic view of the countryside: through the generous sauna glazing and thanks to the integrated exterior windows, you can look out into the lush green nature while taking a sauna. A special highlight are the sauna benches, which are extended outwards, on which you can also enjoy the view while relaxing. The sauna was designed in rustic reclaimed wood – and the relaxation area was also furnished in the appropriate “alpine chic”.

“But the sauna is also really very successful. The whole team around Ms. Holzmeier did a mega job. Around the corner from us is the Klafs company, which builds very high-quality saunas. Based on their website, the decision was clearly made in favor of the company Corso, as they build insanely beautiful saunas in terms of design. I haven’t found anything comparable. Stylish design sauna with black sauna wood: In Finland and Estonia, so-called smoke saunas used to have a rustic tradition. Here, the originally light wood was left to sooty completely black by a wood-burning stove. Today, smoke saunas are hard to find due to the risk of fire. Nevertheless, it definitely looks stylish to design part of the sauna wood in black: it is precisely the contrast to the lighter sauna wood that creates a special tension. Due to the indirect LED lighting behind the backrest, the sauna wood is particularly staged.

The local Douglas fir was used here as sauna wood, which we grow regionally in our own forests only about 15 km away from our manufactory. The wood was felled and transported directly to corso, so that the CO2 footprint is correspondingly low. We planed, dried and processed the wood ourselves. – Our understanding of a sustainable sauna.

The sauna benches and backrests are designed in black treated poplar. A special eye-catcher is the outwardly extended sauna with the two infrared seats.

Our tip for builders who are planning a sauna with black wood for their home:

The sauna wood is treated black with a special agent. If you use the sauna, this color will not rub off. Nevertheless, the black wooden surfaces are more maintenance-intensive than light sauna wood, because dust and signs of wear are more noticeable here.

A dark basement garage in which garden tools and building materials are stored – that was the starting point for this sauna project. Hard to imagine? … Outdoor facilities with pool and garden and the family grew before the idea of your own sauna at home matured in 2019. Initially, a room with the dimensions 180 x 150 cm was planned: “But I quickly realized that this room would be a bit too small for a family sauna: because my idea was that we wanted to use the bio sauna together with our children for warming moments,” says the client.
As a result, she developed the idea of completely redesigning the garage space, which was no longer absolutely necessary. The aim was to retain as many of the existing structures as possible: the garage door was to be replaced by a glass front and an additional breakthrough was to be created in order to install further window elements. The result is a light-flooded, very bright sports and wellness area with treadmill, free-standing whirlpool and a corner sauna with glass front (double-sided glazed).

The entire ambience is very modern and bright. The optimally coordinated wooden elements in oak run as a “red thread” through the entire design and thus ensure a cozy, homely atmosphere. The interior design of the sauna in oak real wood veneer with a structured surface creates an exciting, rustic look and at the same time ensures an optimal sauna climate through the surface enlargement. “It was important to me that the sauna heater is not visible, so we opted for a back wall stove that is hidden behind the sauna wall. So I wanted to avoid that our children constantly have to be careful not to burn themselves on the sauna heater.”
Another special feature that the client attached great importance to is the omission of the complete backrest: both sauna-goers use the sauna mainly while lying down or bent forward, so that the backrest could be dispensed with. The infrared emitter integrated into the rear wall could thus be accommodated completely invisibly. The gullwing doors are only opened when using the spotlight. It was also important to the client to position the corner sauna in the corner of the room with the two-sided glazing, so that you can enjoy the view of the garden when taking a sauna from the cabin: “I am particularly enthusiastic about the floating benches again and again, because no post or the like disturbs the view outside.”

The builders became aware of the corso sauna manufactory through acquaintances who also use a corso sauna: “We already had the idea that we wanted to plan the entire sauna very freely and design it according to our wishes. And corso was simply the perfect partner for this objective: the specialist planners always knew exactly what I meant. The planning was easy, friendly and uncomplicated. And in the end, everything worked smoothly because I was simply well understood as a customer.” And this despite the fact that the entire planning was carried out exclusively via e-mail/telephone and without an architect. Only the exact measurement was carried out on site by corso.

What tips does the client have for others who are planning a similar project?
“I would advise other builders to consider in the first step what would be important to them about their sauna or sauna equipment. On the basis of the many pictures and projects you get good impressions of what is feasible. In the second step, you should really simply get involved in the ideas and experiences of the corso sauna planners: From the individual wishes and specifications, the planners develop a coherent overall concept with their calm manner. I can only say that it was exactly the right decision to rely on corso’s recommendations in many individual respects, for example in the selection of wood, the rear wall stove, the black fittings and also the concealed infrared radiator. Elegant work of art

If you look at the pictures of this sauna project, it is hard to imagine that the sauna is located in a completely renovated basement. Previously, an outdated swimming pool was housed here in a Düsseldorf townhouse, which was hardly used after the children moved out. This gave rise to the idea of transforming the entire floor into one floor for sauna, fitness and leisure/relaxation: the glazed sauna was to form the core element: as a kind of “transparent sculpture in the room” – according to the idea of the client…

For the design planning, the client commissioned studio ASH from Cologne, who took over both the creative part of the interior design and the execution planning. As part of the planning, photorealistic renderings were created in order to optimally plan the overall effect of all design elements and proportions. “That helped a lot to be able to better imagine the space and the furnishings. Certainly, the renderings are a cost factor, but this solution was very helpful for the intensive and optimal planning. I can only recommend this to other builders.”

The project was not entirely uncomplicated: load-bearing walls had to be removed and the reinforced concrete bath completely removed over several weeks with the jackhammer. For example, curved wall areas can be seen in the pictures, behind which the supporting pillars are hidden. However, the result was definitely worth the effort – according to the client: “The created feel-good room and above all the sauna have become exactly as I wanted them to be: with floating benches, large glass surfaces and designed in dark wood. With the curtains open, we can look directly into the garden from the sauna – that’s exactly what we wanted.”

Especially the dark wood was important to him, but other sauna manufacturers could not realize this as desired here. The client finally became aware of the corso sauna manufactory through a report in a wellness magazine. In addition, he had received the recommendation for corso as a suitable project partner from a friend from the neighborhood. The first design for the sauna was quickly completed, followed by intensive coordination – also on site – in order to implement all the details exactly according to the wishes of the client.

The interior lining of the sauna is designed in high-quality thermo-oak real wood veneer with a very reduced, horizontal joint course, which makes the sauna look almost like a designer piece of furniture. Fittingly, the sauna benches are kept in dark thermo-aspen: Due to the thermal treatment (the wood is strongly heated under complete oxygen deprivation), the wood is very moisture and dimensionally stable: The sugar molecules in the wood “caramelize”, so to speak, whereby the originally light aspen wood gets a dark, consistently warm wood color and smells pleasant. The floating benches, together with the two glazed sides, convey maximum lightness and transparency. Through the indirect LED lighting, the entire sauna is skilfully staged. The infrared heater is concealed in the sauna wall and can be activated by a discreet button directly in the sauna.

The planning process took about three months. The client explains: “You have to take the time for the planning, it pays off. And due to the very individual design of the sauna by corso, it ultimately corresponds 100% to my wishes and is actually a noble, transparent work of art for me.” The sauna is now used regularly – at least once a week – and is a welcome relaxation pole in the otherwise busy everyday life. Modern sauna in Bauhaus style

The architectural style Bauhaus continues to enjoy great popularity: simple, straightforward and designed in clear, cubic forms. On the basis of this timeless style, we were allowed to plan and build this sauna for a new building. Despite the purist basic idea, the focus should be on a harmonious living experience in which function and comfort are optimally combined. With large glass fronts, the sauna and the symmetrically arranged shower open in the direction of the anteroom with whirlpool, so that a high level of transparency is achieved.
