Regular sauna sessions are optimal for health – the more often, the better.

Which sauna location is ideal? What type of sauna?

If you are planning an indoor sauna, you should consider where you feel comfortable while sauna bathin and and where enough space is available for your sauna: for example, you could convert a former children’s room or install the sauna in a sloping roof or in the bathroom. If we plan the sauna for you, we make the most of the place. Ideally there is a shower near the planned sauna or there is a water connection so that a wet area can be created. Your bathroom is therefore ideally suited for sauna installation. In addition, it is optimal if you can go outside near the sauna to move in the fresh air in between the sauna sessions.

However, before you decide on the location, you should consider which WHICH KIND OF SAUNA > is the right one for you: Finnish sauna, bio sauna, steam bath, infrared? A lot depends on this, for example the necessary connections/lines and also the choice of the sauna oven. It is best to get detailed advice in the corso SAUNA SHOWROOMS! >

Planning an indoor sauna: possible floor plans

On the diagram you will find examples of sauna floor plans as well as the arrangement of the sauna benches within the sauna, the positioning of the sauna stove and the glass elements. Examples are a sauna with glass corner, sauna with glass front or sauna with rear wall oven. These sketches are only suggestions limitless variations are possible.

We support you in planning to make optimum use of your rooms: Our specialist planners have already created countless individual solutions for unusual sauna locations. Since all our sauna projects are planned and built custom-made, the existing space can be used with utmost accuracy.

How big should a sauna be?

What is the right size for a sauna? The space required for your sauna depends on you: how big are you? Do you sit or lie down? If you only use your sauna while sitting, you will find a place for your sauna even in a relatively small niche. If you want to lie comfortably, we recommend an internal dimension of around 200 cm (smaller depending on your height if necessary). In order to determine the actual space requirement, the wall thickness of the sauna and as soon as the sauna connects to a wall a wall spacing must be added to the interior dimension. We will be happy to show you in detail how big your sauna will be complete: example calculation >

We recommend a visit to the corso sauna exhibition: there you can try out the sauna benches and we can tailor the sauna planning exactly to you and your size. It’s worth it! SAUNA EXHIBITIONS >

Which floors are suitable?

The sauna cabin itself has no floor, which means that the sauna is placed on the existing floor. A sauna should never be placed on laminate or carpet. Floors made of plastic, ceramic, exposed concrete or stone are best suited..

Wooden floors are only suitable to a limited extent because the infusions and drops of sweat can come into contact with moisture.

The floor should be soundproofed and thermally insulated. Optionally, a wooden or PVC foot grate can be placed on the existing floor.

Which power connection and which lines are required?

For the operation of a sauna heater up to 9.0 KW, at least one/if any multiple power connections with 400 V high current are necessary. If you are planning a free-standing sauna heater in a glazed sauna corner, it makes sense to lead an empty pipe under the screed to the furnace position if feasible. This allows the furnace to be connected without a visible cable. SAUNA HEATER >

If a 400 V connection cannot be placed, please consult us in advance to extend the cable routings. For heater outputs of more than 9.0 KW, we create a cable pull list for your electrician as part of sauna planning. The sauna heater and control unit must be connected by an approved electrician. The electrician then also ensures the connection to the residual current circuit breaker of the house.

A 230 V connection is required for sauna lighting. Depending on the sauna equipment, additional connections may be required, e.g. for HiFi or for connection to web modules (smart home/app controllers). This should be coordinated in advance in order to avoid subsequent work.

What should I consider in a bio sauna?

When planning a bio sauna, other points have to be taken into account: A continuous exhaust air line to the outside is necessary in order to actively lead the humidity out of the room after the use of the sauna (important for the avoidance of mold formation). This exhaust air line may not exceed a length of 3 meters. When a cold water connection is placed, the evaporator of the bio-combi-heater can optionally be connected directly to ensure a comfortable, durable water supply. Types of wood: Which sauna wood is ideal?

The sauna wood is the most important material of your sauna. It is a renewable, natural raw material that can be processed in many ways to make your sauna optimal. In addition, wood is a natural heat insulating system: it absorbs the heat and gently releases it back to the interior, making the sauna feeling pleasant. And it simply creates a cozy, homely atmosphere.

Typical types of sauna wood are, for example, aspen, spruce, oak or hemlock but indeed there are more than 100 varieties to choose from. See here which types of wood are particularly popular and what you like best: SAUNA WOOD >

Which sauna heater is needed?

Every SAUNA HEATER > is different! Not only the kW power of the heater is crucial, but also the functionality. Therefore, it is important to deal with the question of which sauna bath form is right for you: do you want “only” to use your sauna at the typical Finnish climate (dry + hot)? Or would you like to use your sauna either as a Finnish sauna and also as a bio sauna (mild + humid)? In the latter case, it is called a so-called combi-heater, which is equipped with an additional evaporator. You can then switch this evaporator on or off, so that your sauna runs either in Finnish-dry operation or as a bio sauna with corresponding water evaporation for a mild-humid climate.

Your sauna is an acquisition for life: take your time and get detailed advice. We look forward to talking to you! CONTACT >

Sauna design with glass: what to consider?

The temperature of a sauna rises to up to 100 degrees. The sauna wood heats up slowly and releases the heat back into the interior of the sauna in a pleasant way. Glass, on the other hand, cannot absorb moisture and therefore radiates the heat strongly back. The temperature then feels higher than it actually is. Therefore, it is important not to use too much glass, because the sauna itself simply “lives” from the wood and its pleasant, natural characteristics. It is therefore important to have a balanced ratio so that the sauna remains pleasant and relaxing. As a rule of thumb, a good ratio of 2/3 wood to 1/3 glass applies.

How to clean a sauna?

wie reinigt man eine sauna richtig vorher nachher | corso saunamanufaktur
sauna cleaning: sauna wood before cleaning and afterwards by special sauna wood cleaner
Cleaning the sauna in 6 steps: this is how it works.

We give you tips on how and with which products you clean your sauna properly:

Sauna relaxation…? Sauna at home!

sauna cleaning product puruvesi: special cleaning for sauna wood

Maintaining and cleaning the sauna properly:

  • Shower before you go to sauna and put a large towel on the bench so that the wood is protected from sweat.
  • Air your sauna and sauna room well after each use to get the humidity out.
  • Do not clean the sauna until it is no longer in operation and completely cooled down!
  • Simply wipe off dust and dirt with a damp cloth. We recommend that you lightly moisten the cloth with the special sauna cleaner PURUVESI (see below for details). Important: please do not use a wet cloth so as not to damage the dry wood!
  • The sauna wood must NOT be cleaned by high-pressure cleaner or water hose, because it is very dry and sensitive to moisture.
  • We advise against disinfectants in the case of sauna wood: the Consumer Centre NRW also notes that the dosages are often too low to really disinfect, allergies are promoted and good bacteria are also killed and the environment is polluted.

If you follow these steps, you will keep your sauna cabin as beautiful as it was on the first day!

How can I protect the sauna wood from sweat and water stains?

In order to protect the sauna wood from stains by sweat and/or water, we recommend the high-quality products for sauna cleaning from Lahti, which are tested and approved for the cleaning and care of sauna wood. Please do not use normal household cleaners! The products can be ordered directly at THE CORSO e-SHOP >

For the cleaning of the sauna wood use PURUVESI, for the impregnation of the clean sauna wood OULUJÄRVI is used:

Clean sauna wood: PURUVESI

If your sauna wood already has stains, you should first remove them with the sauna cleaner PURUVESI and clean the wood completely. On the picture at the top you can see the spotty sauna wood, on the right the same wood after cleaning with PURUVESI. This special sauna cleaner is a 100% biological agent, odourless and without pollutants or solvents. Dosage: Depending on the surface/absorbency, you need approx. 30 – 90 ml PURUVESI per m2. (We strongly advise against using normal household cleaners, as the high sauna temperatures could harm both your health and sauna wood.)

Impregnate sauna wood: OULUJÄRVI

If you have a brand new (or freshly cleaned) sauna, the sauna wood can be impregnated with OULUJÄRVI. This bio-based sauna care creates a lotus effect, so that your wood is effectively protected from stains: water drops simply peel off without entering the wood. Dosage: Depending on the surface/absorbency, you need approx. 30 – 250 ml OULUJÄRVI per m2. The impregnation should be refreshed in the private sector every 2 years in order to protect the wood optimally. The sauna care product OULUJÄRVI is a completely harmless natural product based on the health of the organic, odourless and environmentally friendly. (In commercial sector, the wood should be impregnated every 12 months; 5-litre containers are available.) Order sauna products in CORSO e-SHOP >

Tips for the care and maintenance of your sauna

Lime or water stains at the sauna oven are most appropriately removed with a solid brush and a lye made of citric acid or vinegar. The door snapper should be oiled regularly and re-enacted if necessary. All fittings, in particular the fittings of the door hinges, should be checked regularly and, if necessary, tightened.

It is important to have a good ventilation of the cabin, so that no damage to the sauna or to the technology is caused by masonry moisture. In order to ensure adequate ventilation of the sauna cabin, we plan all corso saunas with a wall spacing of 6 cm. Further information can be found under the key points for sauna size and sauna planning.

CORSO 5013 w pflege | corso saunamanufaktur

How do I remove very heavy dirt?

In the case of untreated solid wood, very strong dirt or discoloration can be sanded off with fine-grained sandpaper (160 grain) if required. Please note, however, that this is not possible with thermal wood. The interior cladding of the sauna and the interior equipment (loungers, etc.) may not be painted. The wall cladding can be wiped from time to time with a fog-moist cloth.

Sauna drinking & eating

All information on what to consider concering sauna and drinking or ating:

Relaxation…? Is most beautiful in your own sauna at home. It is the best investment in your own health!

sauna was wann trinken | corso saunamanufaktur

When, how much and what should I drink when taking a sauna?

After sauna, you should drink at least one litre of water or Spritzer. Or you can weigh yourself before and after to determine the exact loss of fluid during the sauna sessions. This loss of fluid should then be (at least) completely compensated. If you don’t drink enough, even headaches can result – and you certainly want to avoid that!

Experts do not entirely agree on the right time to drink. Some recommend for the best detoxification effect, to drink only after the end of the complete sauna and not already between the sauna sessions. However, your well-being is crucial: if you are thirsty beforehand, it is always better to drink something and listen to the signals of your body. If you do not have a thirst between the sessions, you should drink plenty before and after the sauna visit, which will in any case promote detoxification.

What should you eat before sauna?

Before and after sauna bathing, you should only eat light food: because during the sauna, your heart already has to pump significantly more blood, the circulation and metabolism come on full speed. If you do this with a full stomach, your body will have to compensate for a double load – and this is not particularly conducive to the relaxation effect. Therefore, fresh fruit or a salad are recommended to provide the body with vitamins.

How does detoxification work when sauna bathing?

By sweating in the sauna, the body loses liquid. As a result, the blood is thickened as water is removed from the blood. The thicker blood then absorbs more pollutants, which are then filtered through the kidneys and excreted with the urine. The toxins are thus not primarily sweated out by sweat, but filtered and “discarded” via the internal organs.

Warming infrared emitter

After the workout, this sauna lover relaxes in a fully glazed corso design sauna. Chic detail: the glass sliding door. The interior in bright aspen has been designed in a straight line and fits perfectly into the modern ambience of the property. The smooth wood surface is very calm and homogeneous: due to its low thermal conductivity, the aspen is particularly suitable as sauna wood. The infrared emitter provides additional muscle relaxation in the neck and back area. With the built-in loudspeaker boxes, the sauna can be rounded off musically. The double groove profile with inserted, contrasting shadow joint gives an interesting overall look.

Sauna & kids: at what age?

Design sauna made to measure: the NIMBUS sauna in thermal oak with three glazed sides and floating benches that are indirectly illuminated
Regularly using the sauna strengthens the immune system and prevents colds and infections.

At what age can children start to go to the sauna? What has to be considered, when kids use the sauna?

Relaxation…? Is most beautiful in your own sauna especially with kids!

Hotel sauna with natural stones and backlit saltstone wall at the Four Seasons Hotel in Hamburg

At what age are children or infants allowed to go to the sauna?

There are no clearly defined ages for when an infant or toddler is allowed to go to the sauna. According to the recommendations of the German Sauna Federation, it is already “possible from the 4th month” if the baby is completely healthy according to U4. The professional association of paediatricians and adolescent doctors BVKJ, on the other hand, advises against using a sauna before the first year of life. Ultimately, it is up to parents to decide whether to take their child to the sauna before their first birthday. But from then on, nothing should stand in the way of the common sauna pleasure if the child is healthy and enjoys it (which is usually the case with infants in our personal experience!).

Sauna with children: what do I have to consider?

It is important that you proceed slowly and carefully and pay attention to your child’s reactions: it is best to start with comparatively low temperatures of around 60 degrees in the Finnish sauna without infusions. Start with a short session of 3 to 5 minutes on a middle or lower bench. For the first time, you should limit the common sauna bathing by one session. To cool off, the child should take a lukewarm shower, go to the fresh air, drink enough – and then cuddle and relax together with the parents.

Depending on how your child likes it, you can increase to two sauna sessions after a while. It is important that the child is always together with you as a parent and that it is not unaccompanied in the sauna! Of course, it is best to sweat together with the offspring in your own sauna at home. If you want to take your child to a public sauna, inform yourself in advance whether and at what age it is possible or if there are special times for the “infants or children’s sauna” if necessary.

When can I go to the sauna again after a surgery?

When you are allowed to go back to the sauna after surgery depends on the type and course of the surgery. You should clarify this with the attending doctor in any case.

Is it allowed to go to the sauna with rheumatism?

Basically, you can go to the sauna with rheumatism, but only outside an acute inflammatory interval. Talk to your doctor in advance.

In case of which diseases should you not go to the sauna?

People with kidney problems, inflammation or acute infections, heart failure or heart disease, as well as problems with dizziness, are some indications in which the sauna must/should be dispensed with. Not every disease picture and every expression can be discussed in detail here. Please consult with your doctor if you have an illness, whether sauna is suitable for you or what points you may need to consider when sauna bathing.

Is it allowed to go to the sauna during pregnancy?

This high-quality corso design sauna was built in a particularly noble wooden combination: the bright aspen contrasts with its lightness and pleasant feel to the darker thermal oak. On the one hand, our hotel is 90% wood-made, which is why we attach great importance to natural materials when it comes to furnishing. This is exactly what corso fulfilled: the implementation of our ideas went smoothly and quickly,” says Markus Bach, Managing Director Of Landhotel Lebensart in Sonsbeck.
