Corner sauna in oak and thermo-aspen with double-sided glazing, floating benches, rear wall stove and concealed infrared heater

Sauna at home

The sauna at home – that’s luxury in everyday life: health, relaxation and wellness, all in the comfort of your own home. While a visit to a public sauna is associated with travel, foreign guests and fixed opening hours, having your own sauna offers the great advantage of spontaneity. Whether after work, on a rainy Sunday or after sports – the sauna transforms the home into your very own private wellness oasis. It’s about the special moments of peace. A well-planned, high-quality sauna blends in harmoniously and at the same time increases the value of your property.

Own sauna: what options?

A sauna at home can look very different. Popular are:

  • Indoor sauna: in the basement, under the roof, in the bathroom
  • Combined solutions: as a combination of sauna and infrared cabin
  • Garden sauna: if an outdoor area is available

It is crucial that the sauna fits the spatial conditions and the personal (use) wishes. Some families want a spacious room for sauna sessions together, others prefer a compact solution that can also be accommodated in an apartment.

Finnish, organic, combi…?

Do you like Finnish saunas (dry and hot) or do you prefer the warm and humid climate of the bio sauna? Think carefully about which type of sauna is right for your own sauna:

How big should a home sauna be for 2 people?

The size of a sauna at home depends on the number of people and the available space. For two people, floor areas of approx. 1.5 x 1.5 m are sufficient. It is more comfortable with 2 x 2 m or more if the sauna is to be used for several people or entire families. Basic rule:

  • Small but nice: For apartments or small houses.
  • Comfort sizes: Ideal for families with regular sauna use.
  • Custom-made: If the room has special specifications such as sloping ceilings or niches.

Sauna size for one person: mini sauna

If you “only” want to take a sauna seated and only with one person, then approx. 120 x 100 cm is sufficient. – As a very compact variant or mini sauna.

Sauna for home with sloping roof or niche

Especially in the attic or in old buildings, many ask themselves the question: Is it even possible? The answer is yes. A custom-made sauna can be perfectly adapted to the room conditions – be it under a slope, in a corner or in an open gallery.

The advantage: You make optimal use of available space and integrate the sauna as an architectural highlight. Glass fronts or special lighting elements emphasise the design character. With floor-to-ceiling cladding, the sauna is perfectly integrated into the room.

Which sauna heater is suitable for the sauna at home?

The heart of every sauna is the sauna heater. For use at home, electric stoves or – in certain cases – wood-burning stoves are primarily considered. The choice of the right sauna heater depends on the cabin size, the desired type of sauna and individual preferences:

  • Classic electric oven: for traditional Finnish saunas.
  • Bio or combi heater: also allows gentle sauna sessions with low temperature and high humidity.
  • Wood-burning stoves: More relevant outdoors, create an original sauna atmosphere. (Approval required.)

The selection depends on the size of the room and the structural conditions. For very small saunas, low-power heaters are sufficient, which can also be operated via 230 V if necessary. For larger models, on the other hand, a high-voltage connection is required.

Advantages of having your own sauna at home

A private sauna is not just pure luxury – having your own sauna has tangible advantages:

  • Health & immune system: Regular sauna use strengthens the immune system and circulation.
  • Stress reduction: The alternation between heat and cooling provides deep relaxation.
  • Exclusivity: No crowds, no waiting times, no foreign guests.
  • Time savings: No travel, flexible use in everyday life.
  • Increase in value: A permanently installed sauna can increase the attractiveness of the property

How much does a sauna for home cost?

The cost of a sauna can vary greatly and depends on numerous factors. Basically, depending on size, choice of materials, equipment and visual requirements, investments increase or decrease. Influencing factors are:

  • Size & Number of Persons
  • Types of wood & materials
  • Glass fronts, design & lighting
  • Technology & Equipment

A compact “standard sauna” can often be implemented comparatively cheaply, while the designer version quickly costs many times more. Let us advise you: Since each sauna is planned individually, we will be happy to make you an offer that suits you according to your budget specifications in order to develop the optimal solution for your home.

Großzügige Glasfront: komplett ohne störende (Holz-)Blenden

Conclusion: Quality from the manufacturer. Individual instead of off-the-shelf.

Buying a sauna for your home means making a conscious choice for quality, design and durability. Standard models from the hardware store are often reduced to a few dimensions and materials. If, on the other hand, aesthetics, individuality and durability value aesthetics, choose a custom-made product.

Whether it’s a sloping roof, an open living concept or integration into a modern wellness area: an individual sauna fits in perfectly and thus becomes part of the living concept. The variety of wood types, glass and light elements opens up almost unlimited design possibilities.

FAQ Sauna for the home

What do I have to consider when planning a sauna for my home?

When planning a home sauna, several points are important:
Floor space: Check which room is suitable (basement, bathroom, attic, guest room).
Climate: Good ventilation is crucial to prevent moisture from accumulating.
Connections: A high-voltage connection (400 V) for the sauna heater is almost always necessary.
Safety: Pay attention to fire protection and distances to walls and furniture.
Comfort: Think of a nearby shower or relaxation area.

What is the minimum size of your own sauna? How much space is needed?

A sauna for home use should have at least 1.5 x 1.5 meters of floor space to provide space for two seats. If you want to lie comfortably, you need a length of about 2 meters. A size that suits the number of people is optimal – small saunas are ideal for singles or couples, larger models from 4 m² offer space for the whole family.

Can you install a sauna in the apartment?

Yes, saunas can also be installed in apartments, provided that the necessary room height, ventilation and a suitable electricity connection are available. If you later move to another apartment, the sauna can then also be dismantled and reassembled elsewhere.

Is a basement room suitable for a sauna?

A basement can be ideal if it is dry, well ventilated and sufficiently high. It is important to pay attention to the important points during planning: sufficient distance to the ceiling to avoid condensation, moisture protection and sufficient power supply.

What power connections does a sauna need for the home?

Most saunas require a high-voltage connection (400 V). For very small models, a normal 230 V connection is sometimes sufficient. In the case of a high-voltage connection, the connection must always be made by a licensed electrician.

Which types of wood are suitable for a sauna at home?

Aspen wood, hemlock or thermo-aspen are popular because they are heat-resistant, durable and visually appealing. Designs with sauna-suitable old wood, walnut or oak are particularly high-quality.

How much does a sauna for home cost?

The costs vary depending on size, material and equipment. It is difficult to give a general figure, as each sauna is calculated individually. At corso, the starting prices for a made-to-measure sauna start at €12,990. Prices for a design sauna start at €17,900.

Can a sauna be retrofitted?

Yes, a sauna can also be integrated at a later date, as long as the room has the necessary connections or the necessary connections are laid later.

Can you install a sauna in a small bathroom?

Yes, there are compact models that can be integrated even in small spaces, as long as ventilation is guaranteed.
